It does not weigh your overall authority and award the citation as a prize for ranking. It scans for the most liftable block and takes it. The honest objection is that AI answers are non-deterministic, so a missing citation is just noise. Run the same query twice and the sources can change, which is true. But the decoupling is not measured on a single impression. It is measured as a trend across many queries and engines, and across that distribution the set of pages AI engines cite is materially different from the set ranking in the top organic results. Single-run variance is real. A page that is structurally unliftable loses across the distribution, not by chance, and that is the part you can do something about.

State the magnitude carefully, because this is where bad posts overreach. The share of AI-cited pages that also rank near the top is meaningfully lower than most operators assume, and the gap has been widening as the engines lean harder on retrievability. I am stating that qualitatively on purpose. The specific figures move as the studies refresh, so do not anchor a strategy to a number you read once. The steel-man deserves its due, because it keeps the claim precise. Top-ranking pages do still get cited more often than random pages, and ranking remains a real input.
